I previously sent this question to the bibdesk mailing list, but I was not
yet a member of the list myself and the question hasn't appeared in the
thread list, so I thought it might be because I wasn't yet registered. So
here I come again, and apologies for the double-posting.
I found this

manual regarding the syntax for automatic generation of cite keys in
BibDesk. I would, however, like to achieve a somewhat special way and
couldn't get it to work.
Take three items in the bibliography (similar to the example in the manual):
M. McCracken, A. Maxwell, and J. Howison,
title I, some journal, 2001
M. Routley and S. Spiegel,
title II, some other journal, 2009
S. S. Porst,
title III, yet another journal, 2012
The way I'd like to create cite keys is: [three letters of the authors'
surnames *in total*, i.e. if there is only one author: first three letters;
if there are two authors: first two letters of the first author, first
letter of the second; if there are three authors: first letter of each
author]+[short year number]+[unique letter]
So the cite keys for the above example would be: MMH01a, RoS09a, Pro12a.
While I do manage the year number and the unique letter given the BibDesk
syntax, I can't get the first part (about the authors' names) to work. Any
help would be /greatly/ appreciated!
