Should have included some technical details.

First the errant system

MacBookPro with M1 processor running macOS 11.5 BigSur. Although the problem 
predated the update to 11.5 yesterday. 

MacTex 2021 downloaded and installed Tuesday 13 July 2021

BibDesk 1.8.3 (updated the version installed by MacTex)

The .bib file is on my Dropbox repository, which BibDesk opens without comment.

Second the functioning system.

Mac mini with Intel processor running macOS 10.13.6 High Sierra

Yes. Tex (specifically pidflatex) runs from the command line. Kicks off at 
least this bitches about the ^D.
