That's an elegant solution.  Simple, no power tools req'd.  I like it.

Seeing this a bit late, dunno if this has already been suggested.

Remove the chainring. Cut a piece of rigid tube just the right length
to fit between the crank and the chainring, and of a diameter to fit
closely over the pin. Glue it in place. Re-assemble the chainset.
