At 250 lbs light and responsive handling will be elusive no matter what kind of load I put on the front. Happily, it isn't all fat, so I should be able to muscle the handlebars around or walk the bike past terrain that is too difficult.
I enjoyed Peter's advice on how I should select a wheel or bike: http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/wheels.asp. This is especially funny because I recommend him to everyone I know because I haven't had to true a wheel for a year and a half - instead of having to true them up every other month. In any case the alternative is carrying the load in a backpack and hiking in. I'm willing to give up a lot of handling to avoid that! I am a little worried though - I plan on testing with an equivalent load on a trail near the house before going out into the country to see if my confidence is unwarranted.
