Review: Needs Fixing The problem is because IN_DIR and OUT_DIR are relative paths, which is understood as local path inside the ubuntu home folder (i.e. /user/ubuntu). This folder is most likely not created. HDFS by default is (trying to) creating recursively all the directories, but the ubuntu user doesn't have write permissions to /.
