Migrants from Bihar are accused of taking over urban areas and jobs, most
recently in Mumbai. Bihar has come to represent a cultural symbol of
backwardness, “dirtyness” and trouble, which is almost impervious to
“development”. This article attempts to understand the class and caste
locations of these prejudices and analyses the reasons why Bihar and Biharis
are the target of such singular chauvinism.
