Subject: FW: **SEGWAY IN THE SENATE UPDATE **

On, then off, now back on again.

Here's the latest on the Segway bill from America Walks. [Remember, unless
your Senator is on the Environment and Public Works Committee, there's no
need to do much at this point]

The following news has been posted to the America Walks news page at
http://americawalks.org/news/
-----------------------------
SEGWAY IN THE SENATE UPDATE
-----------------------------
Washington, DC, April 18, 2002 The Senate Environment and Public Works
Committee has rescheduled S 2024 -- the "Segway Bill" -- for the markup
session on Thursday, April 25th, 2002. S 2024 would amend title 23, United
State Code, to authorize the use of Segways (aka "electric personal
assistive mobility devices") on trails and pedestrian walkways constructed
or maintained with Federal-aid highway funds.

The status of the bill is that it is still on the markup agenda, but will be
moved to the last order of business. Committee rules require 10 members to
be present to report a bill out of committee. The first order of business on
the 25th is a controversial bill, so the committee might not get to S 2024,
postponing it indefinitely.

If the committee does get to this bill, there are three options for
committee action:

(1) one member may object to consideration and the objection will be put to
a vote (a yes vote means it will be set aside, a no vote means the bill will
be considered),

(2) the bill may be amended, the amendment will be voted upon and then the
bill will be voted upon (reporting it out of committee, or killing it in
committee), or

(3) the bill will be voted upon as is (reporting it out of committee, or
killing it).

If your State's Senator is on the EPW Committee, we encourage you to call or
e-mail your concerns. Check our list of committee members and their contact
information at http://americawalks.org/epamd/. For more information,
America Walks has posted a summary at that page of comments about the Segway
compiled by Andy Clarke of the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle
Professionals and the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center.
