Tragic Accident

On June 5, a 14 year old girl was killed after riding her bike into the
path of a vehicle on E. Washington Av. at Marquette St. The girl, Rosa
Solis, lived in the Darbo neighborhood. Many of the residents,
including children, responded to the scene of the accident. Most of
them knew Rosa.
The following day, Denise Markham, the neighborhood officer for Darbo,
spent the day talking to and trying to comfort residents and children.
She was very familiar with Rosa and spent time with her family after the
accident.
Denise set up a neighborhood meeting at the Salvation Army for the
evening after the accident. Officer Bob Reese, the person investigating
the accident, responded and answered questions about the accident. Dane
County Mental Health provided 3 crisis counselors, 2 of which specialize
in working with teens and children. Numerous adults, teens and children
were contacted by these workers.
Anger is a normal emotion after such a tragic event. Somehow we think
it will all make sense if someone is to blame or someone is punished.
At the meeting and from others, I have heard the opinion that the driver
of the car should be punished even if he wasn't at fault. The driver
had a green light. Evidence indicates that he was traveling within 5
miles of the speed limit. He had no alcohol or drugs in his system.
All indications are that there is nothing he could have done to avoid
the accident. He has broken down, sobbing during some of our interviews
with him. He has trouble sleeping. He wakes in the morning to sheets
soaked through with sweat. He, like many others in his situation, will
never forget and will be a long time recovering, if he ever does. We
should all remember: But for the grace of God, it could have been one
of us driving at that spot at that moment.
