I have to disagree with most of you. I don't mind paying to ride on a trail, if my fee goes to the upkeep of the trail. The problem, it seems to me (as some have said) is the inequity between toll trails and "free"ways.

There is more than one solution to this inequality, however. I propose that the DOT make our highways into toll roads. I'd start with the Beltline, 151/18 and the new North Beltline, if built.

Some would say that I am being facetious: Drivers would protest even louder than we have been. It'd be a political battle to implement. But if it was phased in gradually, with low tolls to start, drivers would get used to it. Look at Chicago.

While we're on the topic, here is my REAL pipe dream: toll bridges over the Yahara river at all 4 bridge locations. To discourage through-traffic on the Isthmus. Locals could buy inexpensive annual passes to prevent congestion at the toll booths.

yours,
Michael F R
