Dane County park users can comment on proposed fees - including a new fee for
the Capital City Trail - during a public hearing tonight.

Faced with budget constraints, the parks department needs to increase fees or
reduce services, said Ken LePine, Dane County parks director.

"Fees are always difficult," LePine said. "But they're very necessary in order
for us to continue to provide the level of service we've grown to expect."

The Dane County Park Commission will take public comment tonight and vote on
the fees later this year, LePine said

Proposed fees, to start January 2003, include:

Capital City Trail:

A new fee of $10 a year or $3 daily for users of the paved trail, which runs
south of Madison and was completed two years ago. LePine said the fee, which
was proposed last year but delayed, is necessary to maintain the path, which
last year cost more than $27,000.

"So far, we've had to eat those costs," LePine said.
