I have been monitoring the goings on in Portland Oregon (my home town).
This last election, the regional planning organization (METRO) elected a new
President. Two candidates ran, one an existing Metro member, the other, a
build roads, de-fund bike paths, etc. candidate. I recently ran across some
information on the pro-road builder's contributors and I thought I'd share it
here:

On the list there are lots of homebuilders (as opposed to neighborhood
builders), real estate people, and a couple of auto dealership folks. Note,
Bob Lampher is one of the major cars dealers in the area.

Compare those donors to the more broad spectrum of people who chose to donate
to the smart-growth candidate:

One week prior to the election, the candidates were coming up vitrually even in
the polling numbers, with about 60% of voters still undecided (this was not a
major race). Fortunately for Portland, the smart-growth proponent won, but
this race shows there there is backlash to smart growth, and a need to educate
economic stakeholders, like Bob Lampher, about how they can benefit from smart
growth.
