The response I often get when I ask "Wouldn't it be quicker and cheaper
to enhance the bus service vs. commuter rail?" is that people refuse to
ride buses.

It is not cool to ride the bus. Kunstler's book Geography of Nowhere
is often cited where he says that buses in America seem to have neon
signs over the doors that say "losers enter here".

Well, if we can save millions of dollars using buses over rail then
lets spend the money on advertising to convince people how cool riding
the bus is! I mean look at SUVs and pickup trucks, Detroit pounded us
and continues to pound us with ads telling us how we NEED to drive these
useless, polluting, overly expensive behemoths. And it has worked! Sales
of trucks and SUVs outpace car sales now and have for the paste several
years. Couldn't a similar campaign be waged to make bus riding the
coolest thing since DVD players?

Frankly I don't care if it is buses or rails, lets get some regional
travel options going here!
