In reference to post on 1/10 and 1/16/03 , Jeff Schimpff and Darin
Burleigh's counts of single occupancy got me to look up my counts of John
Nolan traffic.
I'm a bit of a stats wonk so while biking my daughter to Franklin School
for three years from fall 1995 to spring 1998 I made counts of cars coming
in on the John Nolan causeway between 7:30 and 8:00am. In all, I did 30
counts of 100 or more cars. I counted the number of cars that had single
occupants vs. more than one occupant. I excluded commercial vehicles from
my counts but I included car pool vans. On a daily basis there were only 5
to 9 cars per 100 with more than one occupant. Annually it worked out to
93% of the cars with only one occupant. I was surprised at how little
variation there was in the counts.
Since very few cars ever had more than 2 occupants, this works out to
approximately 107/100 or 1.07 occupants per car. I expect that the John
Nolan drivers are a slightly different crowd than those on Univ. Ave. &
Regent St..
If the number of passengers per vehicle in John Nolan morning traffic is
more than 1.10 I'll eat my bike helmet.
Pretty poor showing for our morning auto commuters I'd say. No wonder we
never have enough vehicle capacity.
