Forwarded from Fred Bartol, of Dane County Rail Transit:

Just an additional reminder, as follow up to my email of about two weeks
ago, endorsement of the Transport 2020 resolution by the final two city
committees last week clears the way for action by the full Common Council
tonight (Tuesday) evening January 21. A briefing on Transport 2020 is
scheduled for 5:45; the meeting starts at 6:30.

Although endorsements by all the city committees (and by the County Board on
January 9) gives reason to be optimistic that the Common Council will act
favorably, a show of support is still important, especially as publicity
surrounding the county board vote and a negative guest editorial in the
Wisconsin State Journal last week may have put this more prominently on the
radar screen of rail and transit opponents. The important point to make is
that the resolution does NOT commit the region to any particular transit
investment; rather, it establishes the Transport 2020 findings as a point of
departure for further study in to the costs, benefits, and environmental
impacts of a regional multimodal transit development strategy that includes
rail and expanded/enhanced bus service.

Please pass the word along to our Smart Growth allies in Madison to contact
their alders if they haven't done so already, and to consider registering in
support at the Council Meeting (Room 201 of the City-County Bldg)
registrations help even if one doesn't wish to speak in public. Anyone with
questions should feel free to contact me by email at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or
phone me at 251-6126.
Thanks,
Fred Bartol >>
