Funny, I didn't see you at the City Council tonight speaking out in favor of Transport 2020.
And her name is Lacinda with an "A".
You're an idiot. Get off your ass and DO something.
Love,
Al

Lucinda, Pardon my rant, it isn't directed at you personally. But please do pass this along to the steering committee and Teresa Dawson for their due consideration. We don't need 40mpg SUVs, as the Sierra Club has recently advocated. What we need, is the elimination of our society's misguided love-affair with the automobile. The Sierra Club should educate more forcefully that we (we=USA) must stop subsidizing automobile infrastructure and instead increase the level of support for public transportation, smart growth planning, suggest a disincentive tax policy to curb single-occupant-vehicle use, and offer alternatives to use of the automobile. I know that SOME of these things are in the Sierra Club's anti-sprawl priority projects. But the Sierra Club is hypocritical when it simultaneously gives lip service to protecting the environment on one hand, and then on the other encourages the use of automobiles (hybrid, zero-emission, or high-mpg they may be; but encouraging of over-consumption-economics, sprawl, and anti-community they definitely are)! I might consider representing Sierra Club at an AUTO show if Sierra Club's participation was a civil disobedient protest to draw attention to this nation's illogical, war-mongering, imperialist foreign policy that drops bombs to ensure a supply of Mideast oil. (We should be spilling blood and oil across the fenders of the offending SUVs on display.) I know now it is too late for the organization to take into consideration these suggestions; I did not know the Sierra Club was planning to rent a booth the AUTO show this weekend. I would have also encouraged Sierra Club to run in a continuous loop the recent "SUVs support terrorism" television ads (see http://www.thedetroitproject.com/). Finally, and this speaks directly to the issue of hypocrisy on this topic, I hope that all Sierra Club members who show up at the AUTO show arrive by public transportation, bicycle, or walk; At a minimum, in van or car pools. I'm active locally regarding transportation (especially bicycle) and sprawl issues; just not under the guise of a Sierra Club member. However, I AM a member of the Sierra Club, and most of the Sierra Club positions are worthwhile. But its public support for automobiles, of any kind, is where I choose to differ. Sorry for the short notice, but the Sierra Club Midwest Office, in conjunction with our Clean Car Campaign, needs volunteers to help at the Auto Show tomorrow. They will be at the Alliant Energy Center handing out scavenger hunts to the kids that are there with their parents. We need people from around 11:00 am until 5:00 pm. Not straight through, just shifts within that time slot. If you can help, PLEASE call - Teresa Dawson, Cleaner Car Campaign Organizer, at her daytime phone #257-4994 or evening phone tonight #283-6378.
