This free, major, community-wide event, arranged for the community's benefit by the local "DOERS" organization, is designed to accomplish the following community, environmental and humanitarian purposes: (Note: DOERS = Doers Offering Emergency Relief Support) http://doerswi.homestead.com
(1) To show Madison area individuals and families ways they might save money on energy and budgetary costs; (2) To save refugee lives by minimizing our carbon dioxide emissions (which are accumulating in the atmosphere and are predicted to contribute to global warming, more heat waves and dramatically rising seas later this century, if we do not SOON find ways to reduce our CO2 emissions to more environmentally sustainable levels); (3) To help prevent wars by minimizing our use of fossil fuels; (4) To show Madison area individuals and families ways to live more simply, and thereby contribute to global and local "sustainability", in muliple ways.. Some of the many activities, opportunities and business offers you will not want to miss at this DOERS' major energy fair, education and action event include: * An illustrated talk by John Foley, the director of the UW Center for Sustainability and Global Environment, entitled "Global Sustainability, Local Responsibility: How to tackle global environmental challenges in your own life and make a difference". * Energy saving booths, tables and displays by: Madison Gas & Electric; Sustain Dane; Wisconsin Sustainable Future; Zimbrick Honda; Meadowood Ace Hardware Engineering Services (home energy audits); Informing Ecological Design, LLC; Nook & Cranny Home Inspection (home energy audit); Seventh Generation Energy Systems; Williamson St. Coop; Madison Area Community Supported Agriculture Coalition (MACSAC); Family Farm Defenders; Research, Education, Action and Food Group (REAP); Earth in Balance Interiors; Four Lakes Sierra Club and more; * The opportunity to test-drive a Honda Hybrid; * The opportunity to buy the latest energy-saving and money-saving compact fluorescent lights at a good price; * Enter a free drawing to win a home energy audit worth $300, a torchiere lamp, or a set of 6 compact fluorescents; * Enjoy complementary tea and baklava following the talk by Jon Foley and the "action component" (calculating personal/household carbon dioxide emissions) of the program. * Be a part of this "first-of-a-kind" -- possibly precedent setting -- Madison area community event, that may very well be repeated in other communities and again in this community, in the future. Please be part of the solution -- not part of the problem -- by reducing your contributions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases to the atmosphere; saving money in the process, getting to know and helping others in our community to do the same, and most of all, having fun and learning from doing it and seeing others do it. The first 50 people to arrive at the event will be honored with a personally hand crafted "peace button", compliments of Dave B. web publishers of Seattle, Washington [www.PeaceForFree.org].
