On Monday I attended a meeting of Village of Shorewood Hills Traffic Committee. On the agenda was a proposed bike route system. (Thanks for the heads up, Arthur!)
Shorewood Hills has a number of winding streets that don't go anywhere, so a signed bike route system is a great idea. A few bike-route signs exist throughout the Village, but this proposal formalizes the routes, and expands the number of signs. In addition, they may publish a map. One of the really cool ideas they are interested in is destination signage, e.g. 'To Temin Lakeshore Path', 'To Spring Harbor', which would be much more helpful than just 'bike route'. I suggested that the Highland/Farley portion indicate 'To Kendall Ave.', which they were happy to add. Gary Brown, who represents some UW committee, brought up that UW is considering a path parallel to the railroad line, between Highland ave. and Babcock drive. In response, the Traffic Committee agreed to plan for a connecting route. The only disgreement I had was the Post Farm Park area. They didn't want to include this section, because there is a pool there, and they were concerned about bike/pedestrian conflicts. Apparently there have been problems there in the past. I understand their concerns, and I don't care (too much) about leaving it off the map. But unless you've actually ridden through there, its hard to visualize just how wacky it is. On the East end and West end are bike/ped paths. In the middle is a section which is two-way for bikes but only one-way for cars, which becomes a full two-way street. The worst part is that the bike-only lane is on the wrong side! Overall, though, I think they're doing a good job of making the Village more bike/ped friendly. _______________________________________________ Bikies mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.danenet.org/mailman/listinfo/bikies
