The curb eastbound lane of W Dayton Street will be 16 feet between Randall and
Bedford, 13 feet between Bedford and Broom Street.

Note that there will also be a detour for bike traffic using the contra-flow lane on
University Ave. Since Johnson St will be closed from Bedford to State Streets, a
detour will be marked directing eastbound bicyclists to turn left from the Contra-flow
lane across University Ave at Gilman St., following Gilman to Carroll and then Carroll
back to Johnson.

I believe none of this goes into place until the beginning of June. I'm trying to put
together a complete picture of conditions and dates for bicyclists between Regent and
University from Randall to State Streets. I will post that (or get to Darin for
posting on BCP) as soon as it is available. It's better to have it all together than
this piecemeal question response we are having right now.

Below is a response I received form Christy Bachmann in the City's Engineering
Division (my original question follows her response):
Chris, the following will be provided for bicycle traffic:

1. There will be a marked 13 to 16 foot wide lane on the south
side exclusive for eastbound bikes, buses and right turns (for
comparison a typical standard vehicle lane is 11'). The lane
will be marked and signed as such. This is the case for the
complete stretch of the detour being W. Dayton from Randall
Avenue to Broom Street.

2. There will be a contra flow westbound bike lane on the north
side of W. Dayton from Broom Street to Park Street. The lane
will be 5 feet wide, signed and marked with both pavement
markings and flexible tubular marker posts(20 foot spacing).

3. Westbound bikes will not be allowed on W. Dayton from Park
Street to Randall Ave. The road is narrower in these blocks and
without sufficient width. Therefore westbound bikes on W. Dayton
will be required to turn onto Park Street (north or south) and
will not be able to continue along W. Dayton.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Christy:

I have a question about the work being done on Johnson Street
this spring/summer. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the
informational meeting at Union South.

The bike lanes (eastbound and westbound) on Dayton St. are used
by hundreds of cyclists every day. What are the plans for those
bike lanes when Dayton St. is converted to an eastbound one-way
street?

Thanks for your time,
Chris Tiedje
