DISABILITY ADVOCATES TO STOP IN MADISON DURING CROSS-COUNTRY BICYCLE TREK
A team of 40 disability advocates participating in the Journey of Hope cross-country bicycle trek to promote disability awareness will stop in Madison on July 26 and 27th. The 2003 Journey of Hope began in San Francisco, CA on June 15th and will end in Washington, DC on August 15.
The purpose of The Journey of Hope is to bring communities together across the nation in support of people with disabilities. The team members participate in various activities and events to promote a greater understanding of people with disabilities.
The Journey of Hope team will be arriving at the State Capitol in Madison at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 26 to meet with various government officials, disability advocates and members of the media. The team will then cycle to Madison East High School, 2222 East Washington Avenue in Madison. A picnic and basketball challenge games are scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. Disability and bicycle advocates as well as media representatives are encouraged to stop by the events to meet the Journey of Hope team members and learn more about disability issues. The Madison events are sponsored by Saturn of Madison, Big Mike's Super Subs and The Arc-Wisconsin Disability Association.
In addition to generating public awareness on behalf of people with disabilities, Journey of Hope teams have raised funds to support projects that benefit people with disabilities. Camp Wawbeek in Wisconsin Dells and United Cerebral Palsy of Southeastern Wisconsin have been recipients of both monetary grants and in-kind services provided by Journey of Hope teams.
