I aggressively put out the hand signal for "STOP" and then plant both my feet on the ground (easy to do on a recumbent). Vehicles give me plenty of breathing room when I do this. I am not sure why, though I have speculated with other 'bent riders that motorists aren't quite sure how to handle us, as though we might morph into some freakish monstrosity that will blow out their tires at the least provocation--or at least short out their cell phones.
