Apparently the editors at the NYT do not understand that solar panels do not *conserve* energy, they *produce* energy. This letter to the editor writer tries to set the record straight and points out the great ways the Japanese do conserve, but he too confuses solar energy production with conservation. It obviously ain't the same, but in order for solar to be practical, strong conservation measures must be in place.

Note I said *conservation*, not *deprivation*. "We have the technology"* to live comfortably and energetically efficiently.

*First one to name that 1970's TV show this phrase came from, I'll give a 15W (60W incandescent equivalent) sub-compact fluorescent bulb!

Saving Energy in Japan

o the Editor:

Re "With Sun on Roof, More Yen in the Pocket" (Business Day, July 29):

Your photo of solar-powered residences in Yoshikawa, Japan, shows other ways, besides solar panels, that the Japanese conserve energy. We see two smallish cars, a bicycle, laundry air-drying and no lawns to mow.

Perhaps we Americans with our large cars, drive-everywhere mentality, innumerable consumer products powered by electricity or gas, and large lawns that require constant clipping could learn from these other techniques how to save energy - and the planet.
