Title: Don't let Congress stifle public input, trash clean air and destroy parks

Don't let Congress stifle public input, trash clean air and destroy parks in giant transportation bill

Dear Michael,

Laws protecting clean air and public health are endangered by a proposed transportation funding bill that could lead to more sprawl, traffic and pollution. These proposals could block local input into transit projects, leaving Americans breathing polluted air for decades and damaging communities and open spaces. Let Congress know that you want a transportation bill that protects the environment, public health, and local input.

Subject: Support transportation that protects clean air and public health

Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],

I support transportation legislation that protects clean air, public health and local input in transportation decisions. However, I oppose proposals by the Bush Administration and some in Congress that weaken long-standing laws protecting clean air, public health, parks, wildlife refuges, wild and scenic rivers, and historic sites, as part of the reauthorization of the federal transportation law, TEA-21.

We need a transportation bill that strengthens accountability for health and the environment and doubles funding for transit, clean air programs, and transportation, land use, and natural resource planning. These must also include opportunities for ample public involvement.

Please oppose provisions in the Administration's SAFETEA bill and in other legislative proposals that would weaken the Clean Air Act and other core environmental laws. Rather than relaxing clean air standards, I urge you to require better mitigation of environment and health impacts of road projects. We need added incentives for cleaner, affordable and equitable transportation choices. And we need to strengthen the role of the public and local officials in transportation decisions.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Michael Neuman

What's At Stake:
Long-standing laws protecting clean air and public health are in danger of being weakened by a giant transportation bill currently being considered in Congress.  Proposed legislation would roll back Clean Air Act protections, limit input from the public and local officials, and put road builders firmly in charge.  These proposals could leave Americans breathing polluted air for decades while damaging our communities and cherished open spaces. Let Congress know that you want to see a transportation bill that protects public health, the environment and local input.
