Persons interested in serving on the BFW board are encouraged to contact
BFW staff or existing board members at any time. In every issue of the
Wisconsin Bicyclist, BFW's newsletter that all members recieve, there is a
call for persons interested in serving on the board that appears just below
the list of current directors. Because this listing is small, when there
is an open position, I make every effort to place a larger request in the
WB...such as that which appeared in Vol. 9, No. 2, which was printed and
mailed at the beginning of July 2003. People regularly contact BFW
expressing interest, and their names are put on a list for when positions
open up. When positions open up, the Nominating Committee (which consists
of current board members) reviews the names for qualifications and makes a
recommendation to the full board for names to be included on the ballot, or
to the Executive Committee (which acts when there is no scheduled meeting
of the full board) for approval. In the past, there has always been equal
or less number of persons interested as positions available. This year
there were more interested persons than positions. The final ballot is to
be sent to the full, current membership 30 days prior to the final count of
the election ballots. Directors are elected by a plurality of the votes.
The criteria for board membership is as follows:
The Nominating Committee has established three distinct sets of
criteria. They involve (1) commitment, (2) competency and (3) diversity.
Commitment refers to the extent of interest for any potential nominee to
serve on the BFW board of directors. This involves:
(1) Amount of time willing to commit to being on the Board;
(2) Enthusiasm about bicycling as a pastime; and
(3) Interest on working on bicycling issues involving the well
being of the general public in communities within and across Wisconsin.
Competency covers those unique talents that any potential nominee could
contribute as a member of the BFW board directors. The Nominating
Committee specifically focused on these seven personal assets:
(1) Access to distinct constituents and/or interests
(2) Writing talent
(3) Leadership skills
(4) Fundraising abilities
(5) Professional epertise in some specific area of importance to
the BFW, such as accounting, urban planning, and law.
(6) Political influence with state elected and appointed
officials or with some relevant interest group.
The final set of criteria fall under the heading of diversity. These
include:
(1) Geographic (region within the state; urban versus rural)
(2) Gender
(3) Race/ethnicity
(4) Professional background
(5) Connection to bicycling
