It's funny how at work and in social situations people consider me something of an
extremist for my bicycle advocacy and scorn for large non-car motor vehicles, and in
the bikies setting I'm sometimes considered damn near a conservative (and not in the
CONSERVing sense) because I dare to own a car and drive it (more miles for long
distance trips than day-to-day, but nonetheless scorned for using it at all and
questioning some of the momilies spouted on the list).
Anyway, I received the following message from another mailing list, and although it's
been mentioned on bikies, I haven't seen a full announcement here yet

Next week, Madison is joining at least 44 cities across the world in
observance of <bold>World Car-Free Day </bold>(9-22-03). You can help
make Madison a leader in sustainable transportation by joining the
Madison Car-Free Challenge!
The <bold>Car-Free Challenge</bold> will run for two weeks,
<bold>Wednesday Sept. 24 through Tuesday Oct. 7</bold>.
To participate:

Fill out a short baseline survey
Cut out as many car trips as you can for two weeks, and log all your
trips (using a simple form that we provide)
Challenge winners will receive<bold> prizes</bold>, including ten free
rides on Metro Transit, Community Car membership discounts, and bicycle
accessories from Budget Bicycles, Madison Bicycle Co. and Yellow Jersey.
Awards will go to folks who are already living a car-free lifestyle, as
well as to those who make the greatest efforts to reduce their driving
for the Challenge.

of two <bold>Car-Free Challenge kick-offs</bold>:
Monday, Sept. 22 at 7:00-8:00 pm
Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 5:00-6:00 pm

You will learn how you can <bold>save money</bold> and <bold>reduce
greenhouse gas emissions</bold> by reducing the amount you drive. You'll
