All:
This morning, while riding southbound on Bassett St. at Dayton St., I
noticed a "One Way" sign indicating the east-bound flow of automobile
traffic on Dayton St. My understanding is that Dayton St. is not, in fact,
one way, but rather two-way with one-way automobile traffic and two-way
bicycle traffic.
Hence, as has been discussed in this forum before, left-turn on red is
prohibited onto Dayton St. However, having seen many people left-turn on
red onto Dayton St. from Bassett St. (including several that missed me only
because I was looking out for myself by looking out for them), I'm wondering
if the One Way sign in question is contributing to the problem. Drivers see
the One Way sign and just assume that left-turn on red from one One Way
street (Bassett) onto another One Way street (Dayton) is OK.
On a related, but tangential note, I'm happily surprised that no one has
been hit and killed yet while riding the contra-flow lane on Dayton St.
Given the number of close calls I've had, and seen, {The Deity or
Supernatural Power of Your Choice} must be watching over all Dayton St.
contra-flow lane bike riders quite closely.
