today i received this account in an email from a friend: "[we] were coming back from a ride through the arboretum this morning and we were on the bike path that runs parallel to wingra dr. we came around one of those blind corners (blind because of the bridge you have to go under) and AHHH! there is a dipshit in a MPD squad car driving down the bike path, taking up the entire path and then some. we almost flew over his hood. we had to brake hard and swerve into the grass to go around him."
my friend points out that 5 feet over, running paralel to the path, is a roadway. she inquires, as do i, what's the deal? personally, it bothers me to see squad cars on any bike path, in any scenario, at any time. i've seen them creeping down the isthmus path at night with and *without* headlights on. one evening while being questioned by a very nice officer at the corner of main and blount, i saw two squad cars comming towards us from either direction on the isthmus path. sure they were just following in the madison tradition of every on-duty officer in the area congregating at any and every traffic stop but were they in such a hurry that they couldn't use williamson or main street? in my opinion, cops shouldn't be allowed to use motor vehicles on the bike path unless active pursuit dictates it's absolute neccessity. they ought walk, or ride thier bikes, on the path like the rest of us. anything else isn't safe, period. -martin oh and yes, i am expressing my concern to the appropriate offices. thanks. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
