Dear Bikies,

I was just invited to be on a campus committee planning to promote bicycle use at UW-La Crosse (this spring and next fall.)

We do have free city bus passes for all students (faculty/staff can purchase them for relatively low cost) and bike racks on buses here. Our bus service is good for coverage and needs improving in the schedule area. Neighborhood complaints about street parking seem to have increased. The university has many surface parking facilities but no ramps (and, as I understand it, no ramps planned because of cost.) There does not seem to be lots of bike use here, despite great conditions. In fact, I've even heard stories of students driving their cars from their dorms on one side of campus to their class building on the other side (a few blocks at best) and in our Sunday paper was a letter to the editor from a student whining about lack of parking near campus.

So, I'm writing to ask if you all have ideas for promotions, activities, info/handouts and/or other things that would highlight the true costs of cars and the benefits of bicycle commuting.

I've been looking into businesses, colleges and cities that offer incentives in the form of Travel Bucks to those who carpool, bus, walk or bike to school/work. The cost of the incentives turns out to be less than the cost of constructing and maintaining car parking. I also know that Madison's BTWW has events that might be "convertible."

I assume other committee members will also bring ideas.

Thanks for any info you can offer.

Cathy, La Crosse
