I posted this on apbp and got some good responses, but for a more local angle I am posting it here.
I recently presented the Dodge Co. Bike/Ped plan to the Dodge Co. Highway committee. They did not pass it on to the County Board because they fear by designating some highways as bike routes, they will increase their liability. I explained that it will not, anymore then designating a stretch of highway a county highway. Does anyone have any thing further to help me with my argument? I feel they will adopt it sooner or later but for now they are going to their attorney with this question so we will see what happens there. Please don't tell me about the Wayne Co. vs Boub (sp?) case in Illinois, I know about that, anything else? Another question they asked, which I get asked a lot is, "So how many people actually ride on these county and town roads." And unless the county is lucky enough to host SAGBRAW or some other large ride, I really do not have an answer for them. Does anyone? Can we start a web site like the Car Free Challenge where we all voluntarily record our miles and where we rode on a weekly basis? Not scientific I know but it would be something. Any ideas? Ann M.
