Thought you might be interested in this news from La Crosse. Apparently the bicyclist's family has put the pressure on. I don't know what new info causes the DA to say "there is reason to believe [the] death may have resulted from the negligent use of a vehicle."

DA calls for inquest into medical resident's death

By DAN SPRINGER, La Crosse Tribune
A six-person jury will be seated later this summer to decide whether a La Crosse woman should be charged in the death of a La Crosse medical resident last year.

La Crosse County District Attorney Scott Horne said Wednesday that his office will conduct an inquest into the death of Scott J. Sprtel, 28, who died Sept. 26, 2003.

Sprtel was killed after his bike was rear-ended by a car driven by Laura Erickson, 69, of La Crosse, near the top of Irish Hill on Hwy. 33 in the town of Shelby, police said.

Erickson was not injured.

Contributing factors in the early-morning accident were initially believed to be darkness and lack of rear lighting on the bicycle, according to the La Crosse County Sheriff's Department.

Police said neither alcohol, speed nor recklessness appeared to be factors.

Erickson has not been charged in the accident but, Horne said, a review of the information collected by the sheriff's department indicates "there is reason to believe that Scott Sprtel's death may have resulted from the negligent use of a vehicle."
