Madisonians Join National Protest Against Gas Guzzlers on Earth Day!
Critical Mass Bike Ride from UW's Library Mall to Converge on Beltline Hummer Dealer

In celebration of Earth Day, bike enthusiasts, environmentalists, feminists and peace
activists will hold a creative demonstration at 5:00 pm outside the Bergstrom Hummer
dealership (1200 Applegate Road - off the Beltline) in Madison on Thursday, April 22.
The protest will begin at 4:00 pm at the UW-Madison Library Mall with a critical mass
bike ride to the dealership.

Similar actions are occurring in over a dozen cities nationwide. Activists aim to
educate other citizens that buying a 8,500 lb vehicle that gets 10 miles per gallon,
half the gas mileage of a Model T, is not only a waste of resources but morally
reprehensible, given that soldiers and civilians are now dying in Iraq and elsewhere
for the sake of procuring more petroleum.

"How any patriotic American could stomach buying such a dinosaur is really beyond
me,” noted John Peck, a UW-Madison graduate student in Environmental Studies.
"And to make matters worse, we now have Wal-Mart unveiling a kiddie version of the
Hummer on May 1st to create more unsustainable demands on our planet's limited
resources. My own brother had to serve in the military during the last Persian Gulf
War. If they reinstate the draft for this latest oil grab, the Hummer drivers should
be called up first."

"Much as the ‘war on terror’ has not made anyone any safer, the Hummer's
war on common sense hurts owners' pocketbooks, endangers drivers and bicyclists and
does far more damage to the environment than responsible forms of transportation,"
said Maya P. Cole, a spokeswoman for Madison Women for Peace. "One only needs to
consider the families of children with asthma residing in the ten polluted counties in
Wisconsin which no longer meet healthy air standards of the U. S. Environmental
Protection Agency to see how this affects all of us."

"My son was diagnosed with asthma at an early age," Cole continued, "and I find it
disheartening that while the City of Madison debates restrictions on smoking in
public, we have not had any dialogue on the health costs imposed by vehicles that are
exempt from emission standards as this monstrosity was erected outside of Madison."

Activists will also be calling on the White House and Congress to eliminate the
federal tax break that is offered to business owners who purchase Hummers. The Bush
Administration's so called "Economic Stimulus Plan" allows small business owners who
purchase Hummers to receive a $100,000 tax break, while businesses that purchase far
more ecologically responsible vehicle like a Toyota Prius hybrid only receive a $2,000
tax break.
