I turn left off of University daily. The best way to do it is to time it so that the 
light behind you turns red as you approach your left turn, then after all the motor 
vehicles pass you, move over to the left lane without having to contend with any of 
them. Turn left legally and unobstructed. 

Second best way is to do the crosswalk thing like you described. 

Third, cross University and use Dayton.
