We've been living in our first (and I am thinking last) home now for nearly eight years, and have used the Scotts mower from day one. We did experience strange looks from the neighbors at first, but now we get a lot of "thumbs up" signals from people walking by. Plus it's good to get a shoulder/arm workout in addition to the legs on our bikes.
The texture of our lawn has adapted nicely. That, in addition to using a environmentally sound lawn service, has been worth it. But it took a bit of patience.
