Five cyclists have filed a one million dollar law suit
against the NYPD accusing them of illegaly
confiscating thier bicycles and causing permenant
damage to bike locks during the September 24th
Critical Mass ride.
The lawyer hired by the plaintiffs claims to have a
video tape sowing officers deliberately cutting the
locks on bikes that were chained up along 36th Street
on September 24th.
The plaintiffs in the case all claim that when the
realized the police were arresting people for
participating in the ride, they decided they no longer
wished to participate. So they dismounted, locked
thier bicycles legally, and walked away intending to
return later to reclaim thier bikes. When they finaly
did return, they found police had cut thier locks, and
siezed thier bicycles.
An NYPD statement on this issue reads: "Abandoning
their bicycles is a tactic that won't work. People who
break the law have to face the consequences - this is
one of them."
Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
