Jamie Peck, the cyclist hit by the drunk driver on Sprecher, is in fair condition. From what I heard he suffered a gash in the back of his head, has multiple broken bones and will require a neck brace for about 6 weeks. Overall he will make a full recovery. A helmet would have lessened the severity of the head injury.
He is the tenured UW geography professor, originally from Great Britain, that Mike Barrett thought. In Europe no one wears a helmet - unless you are an American. If I recall, the section of Sprecher where the accident occurred has bike lanes/paved shoulder.
