I would agree with Tim on the description of the "bike lane" on Sprecher.  The average citizen (and that is most people) would have no clue that it is a bike lane.  It's a line slapped down on the road. It means nothing to most motorists.

The whole surrounding area is geared to the car culture, and we are way behind in addressing the seriousness of the problem.  Try commuting over the Buckeye or Cottage Grove Road bridges over the interstate anytime, especially rush hour.  With the absence of defined "bike lanes" and no connecting paths, plus the pig in the python development across the interstate, more "accidents" like this are sure to come.  With the exception of the bike lanes on Buckeye (which did not come without a fight, sadly), all indicators are to step on the gas and go like hell to your own private piece of sprawl.  Bicyclists are about as safe as the poor salamanders who used to cross Acewood to go to the resevoir at Acewood Park.

That section of AB does have a (very narrow) bike lane, but it is always covered with gravel. It's not really a bike lane, just a line painted about two or three feet to the left of the edge of the asphalt. I always ride out in the road on that section, especially going out of town. Next time I see a black Bonneville approaching from behind, though, I'll risk the flat tire to get on the gravelly lane.
