A friend of mine suggested that I post something that irks me to this list, and unfortunately this thread has appropriate timing.

I frequent the bike lane on Johnson, living less than a block off it. Since the road was re-done recently, the bike lane markings and signage have been wanting. I've seen more people riding on the right this past year, with fewer markings, than I did before construction, not to mention cars parked/waiting in the pretty wide section of the bike lane right before State. I can't count how many cars I've seen run the red at Wisconsin/Johnson, or how many've pulled over to let a police car through, but then clogged the road up again, not noticing the ambulance _behind_ the police.... Two weeks ago there was a bad crash at Johnson/Pinckney--an SUV wasn't watching the stopped traffic ahead of it, hit another, and one of them _flipped over_!!!

I don't think Johnson's a very safe street either, and although I'm sure there are other things that can be done to make the roads safer than just marking bike lanes, I bet(well, at least hope) with more lane markings and signs posted (esp. north of State St) drivers may be more aware of bikers that could be there... and it would at least get people riding on the correct side of the street.

I'd appreciate it if any of you who've been/go on that section of road to notice where paint and/or signs are needed and contact the city's ped/bike coordinator.

Thanks,
Monica Harkey

Yes, thank you for your notes on the Comprehensive Plan. My hub and I just got back from China with our adoptive daughter, but I hope one of us is sane enough to attend the meeting at Dean Clinic East on June 2.

What alarms me is we have seen two vehicle/pedestrian deaths...

and now one vehicle/bicyclist "accident" all within less than a year, all within about a 3 mile radius. Three car versus pedestrian/bike incidents, with two deaths, within less than a year, in a very small geographic area. To quote Willy Loman, "Attention must be paid!"

your own private piece of sprawl....

Almost needless to say, this is the same problem all around Madison, not
just in the Buckeye Road area. It's a problem around most moderate and
large sized cities. But just because the problem is not unique to
Madison, that does not excuse the City of Madison from addressing it.
Unfortunately, based on my review of the city's latest plan, this problem
is going to continue to get even more intolerable in Madison in the years
to come.
