Communications Associate
Adventure Cycling Association
Missoula, MT
Adventure Cycling Association seeks a well-organized professional to
work on two of our key publications and to serve as our liaison with the
media. We seek an individual who enjoys bicycling, loves to tell stories
and communicate with people, and is an excellent writer and editor. The
position is based in Adventure Cycling's headquarters in friendly and
beautiful Missoula, MT.
Duties and responsibilities
Serve as deputy editor of Adventure Cyclist magazine. The Communications
Associate will work with the Editor-in-Chief of one of America's top
bicycling magazines, Adventure Cyclist (AC). We produce nine issues of
AC annually. Tasks will include editing, production management, writing,
and correspondence with writers and photographers.
Edit and produce the print and online versions of The Cyclist's Yellow
Pages (CYP). The Associate will be in charge of producing the CYP,
Adventure Cycling's guide to resources for national and global bicycle
travel. The printed CYP is produced once a year and is approximately 100
pages. The online version of CYP is updated throughout the year and
serves as the content source for the printed version. Tasks include
editing, proofreading, research, working with our design team, writing
content, and working with our advertising salesperson and contract
authors. The Associate will also occasionally assist with other
publications.
Serve as media liaison for Adventure Cycling. The Communications
Associate will be Adventure Cycling's point person in responding to
media inquiries and maintaining our database of media contacts
nationwide. The Associate will work with the Communications Director,
Executive Director and other staff to cultivate and track media
connections and ensure that key media contacts are regularly provided
with information and ideas about Adventure Cycling's initiatives and
upcoming events, publications and milestones (such as our 30th
anniversary in 2006).
Overall, we project that the Communications Associate will spend
approximately 75 percent of his/her time on publications and 25 percent
as media liaison. Work will occur on Adventure Cyclist and with the
media throughout the year. Work on the printed CYP will peak in the
first quarter of the calendar year (we publish the CYP in the spring),
but will require the Associate's involvement year-round.
Knowledge and skills
Strong organizing skills and deadline-oriented. Understands how to
create and use systems to get work done in effective and efficient ways.
Excellent communication skills, especially clear and compelling writing
ability, and solid proofreading skills. Ability to identify, craft and
refine stories. Exacting editor, with a sense of how to make a story
flow and how to eliminate "padding." Understanding of what makes a good
news story or feature. Ability to work with reporters and editors on
assembling information or shaping a story. Instinct for identifying the
nugget of a "good story" amidst all the projects and work carried out by
Adventure Cycling, and being able to pitch that story to targeted media
outlets.
Education and experience
Minimum of Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or
university. Preferably, the top candidate should be an avid cyclist with
an intuitive feel for what makes bicycling and bicycle travel fun and
appealing. S/he should have a minimum of four to five years of
experience working as an editor or writer in publications (such as
newspapers or magazines), and/or a communications and public relations
firm. Additional experience of interest to us would be work involving
communications or publications in a non-profit or business setting.
Experience working with printers and hands-on graphic layout abilities
is a plus.
Compensation and workplace
The position will be competitively compensated in the Northern Rockies
region. Benefits include paid time off for holidays, paid time off for
