Perhaps. But I think that pedestrians who are going react unpredictably
when passed by bicyclists on a shared use path will also react unpredictably
when faced by a cyclist heading right at them. Will they know to stay
'in their lane', and assume the conscientous cyclist will pass them
safely? Or will they 'graciously' get out of the way, stepping
into the other lane, perhaps unwittingly stepping into the path of
bikes coming from the other direction, or perhaps even into the oncoming
cyclist (who also moved into the other lane to pass them)?

Much better to reduce unpredictability, by sticking to a
simple set of rules, that applies to everyone, and which most
people already know:
Stay right, pass left when safe.
