The death of the Night Biker: Those of us on bicycles can see
ourselves having been run over by that car. But we do know we
are smaller than cars in the same way that a mini-car driver
knows his vehicle could be smashed by an SUV or truck. I agree
with the notion that our culture promotes the idea that our
Government has made our lives safe, removing all but "tea
totalers" from the roads. We hear that cell phones must be
banned and other distractions. We look to the STATE for justice
and feel everybody must pay. Yet all is merely an illusion in
support of legislation. Remaining on the roads as car drivers
are emotionally disturbed, medicated, infirm, retarded and a
hundred and one other factors which might make driving skill and
judgment poor. Even oncoming headlights, dirty glasses or a
simple headache could cause the demise of a bicyclist. Remember
that while driving in a car on a two-way street, one is only
about three feet away from "instant death."
