If you venture onto bike paths today, be careful.

I rode to work about 8:30 this morning, and everything was fine until I turned onto the Southwest/Missing Link path at Randall Avenue. I rode a few yards down the path, and then the bike slipped under me, and I landed
on my knee, which is still throbbing as I write. As I lay on the
pavement, I watched another biker, right behind me, fall.

The streets I rode on this morning were just fine -- wet but not slippery.
The bike path pavement looked like the streets -- until I examined it
closely -- but it was *not* fine.

By the time you read this, the ice on the bike paths may have melted, and
they may be perfectly bikeable. But I would advise caution.

I had uncharacteristically ignored the weather and road condition reports this morning and ended up regretting it. Unlike Mitchell, I was fortunate enough not to fall, but a number of places were very sketchy. This includes bike paths AND streets--side streets especially. I heard and saw several MVs sliding to stops in the Vilas and Tokay neighborhoods. The Cap City trail between Jenifer and North Shore and the North Shore-Brittingham path were both sanded, but the Southwest was not--not at all.

The forecast this week is for daytime highs above freezing, and nighttime lows below freezing, with intermittent light precipitation until Sunday.

If you've got studded tires, now might be a good time to use them.
