Here are some great plans for studding tires from the Edmonton Bicycle
Commuters Society:
http://edmontonbicyclecommuters.ca/cgi-bin/content/content.cgi?action=winter#studs

I used these plans and made myself a pair a few years ago. They work great, but
you need knobby tires for the screw to get enough purchase to hold securely in
the rubber. Unfortunately, this precludes use on a traditional British 3-speed
as there wouldn't be fender clearance, and in any case I don't think there are
knobbies available in that size. I park my 3-speed for the couple of days each
winter that there is ice during my commute and ride a mountain bike with my
homemade studded tires.

I have seen tales of woe and intrigue on the 'net about studding one's own
tires. Mitch, try Sheldon Brown's web site, at http://www.sheldonbrown.com for
more info on the topic. Sheldon is also an aficionado (sp?) of those black and
Sturmey steeds, and one of his pages might even be able to point you toward a
studder for one.
