Paul Leary asked about school policies that forbid students to bicycle to school and asked "Would this program and/or its coordinator be in a position to act to change such rules?" This is a good question. The answer is that the SRTS coordinator will have to deal with these school policies and may have some influence in changing such policies or perhaps help remove the conditions that have lead to such policies. My wife is a school teacher in Monona and rides occasionally to her school. When she asked where were the bike racks, the administration responded that were no racks because if there were racks this may encourage bicycling or tacitly approve such activity among students. All students in the MOnona-Grove school district are either driven or bussed to school. The reason given why students in the City of Monona are not allowed to walk is because there are no or too few sidewalks. If a SRTS program brought the school and community together to provide sidewalks on all major school routes, perhaps the school policy would then change allowing kids to walk and perhaps bicycle. I think this position will have many challenges like this.

The obvious effect of this rule is more students being brought to school by car, which negatively impacts the "Safe Routes to School" idea.
