I hope someone will testify in favor of skinny streets tonight at the
Common Council meeting tonight, because I'm already committed to teaching
bike maintenance to some www.WheelsforWinners.org volunteers tonight, and I
can't.
I'm sure that others will testify against skinny streets, as some folks
always testify against anything that even potentially slows down
automobiles. And I'm sure that some will have reams of data and will
contend that such data proves that skinny streets are less safe (because of
a higher incidence of crashes, e.g.)
What those folks won't say, and what someone else should point out, is that:
a) higher incidence of crashes is not necessarily a bad thing - I'll take
ten fender benders (even with minor injuries) over one fatality any day
b) one reason skinny streets might have a higher incidence of pedestrian
and bicycle crashes over wider streets is because there tend to be more
bicyclists and pedestrians on skinnier streets. It's easy to have 0
bike/ped crashes on a street that has 0 bicyclists and pedestrians.
The policy decision to allow skinny streets has been two years in the
making, and, has the potential to allow new neighborhood streets in Madison
to be, gasp, as narrow as many of the existing streets in some of the
highest pedestrian/bicyclist/transitrider (and most beloved) neighborhoods
in Madison.
It's time Madison allowed new streets to be built like the best of the old
streets. And if those streets don't work, then someone should tell me and
all my neighbors who live on skinny streets!

If anyone's available to come talk at the council meeting tonight in favor
of skinny streets, that would be great. It seems at least some are
mobilizing against the effort. The meeting is at 6:30 pm tonight (Tuesday)
at the Madison Municipal Building across the street from the usual location.
If anybody wants to see the attachment that this guy sent council members,
let me know, and I'll email it. It's too large for the yahoo group, so
yahoo keeps rejecting the email with it attached.
Thanks!

Dear Alder
I apologize for the lateness of this information. I have been very busy
lately. I will be referencing some of this information tonight.
The street width, land use, crash data, and excerpts from the LRTPC
minutes are included to help you make an informed decision tonight.
Thank you for your concern and patience.
