Buying a hybrid does nothing to reduce the need for highway pavement,
either, nor does it improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists (or
other drivers for that matter).  Only driving less (or not at all) will
do that.

But if someone has to drive, it's best to use the most fuel-efficient and
low polluting vehicle on the market and car-pool if possible.
