Zoller, Gerhard Hugh "Gerd"
POYNETTE - Gerhard Hugo "Gerd" Zoller, age 67, of Poynette,
died suddenly on Thursday April 20, 2006. Zoller was born Jan. 22,
1939 in Rudolstadt, Germany. After serving in the German Army,
Zoller earned master's degrees in civil engineering and business
from the Munich Institute of Technology, where he met his future
wife Tellervo Hulkko. In 1965, he moved to Finland to marry
Tellervo. In 1968, the couple moved their young family of four to the
United States. On his way to the West Coast, Zoller stopped to
visit his sponsor, UW-Madison engineering Professor John Klus.
Klus arranged a few "practice" interviews so Zoller could prepare for
his job search in Oregon. However, J.H. Findorff & Son Inc. offered
Zoller a project manager position, so Zoller decided to stay in
Madison. Although they initially had planned to stay in the United
States only a few years, the Zollers made the Madison area their
permanent home. Zoller rose quickly through the ranks at Findorff,
being promoted to chief estimator, executive vice president,
president (1979-88) and chairman of the board. The lengthy list of
construction projects he oversaw include Oscar Mayer Foods
Corp., J.C. Penney, General Casualty, the Medical College of
Wisconsin, Sentry Insurance, and many jobs for UW-Madison
including the UW medical center. In 1989, Zoller and his wife took
a year's leave to travel the world, and discovered that he could
indeed enjoy life outside work. He retired from Findorff in 1992.
Upon 'retirement', Zoller became active with the University of
Wisconsin Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering,
where in addition to teaching he provided assistance with training,
continuing education and various special projects. One of Zoller's
recent passions was CECADE, a non-profit organization whose
mission is to help rural communities in the Andes near Cusco,
Peru become self-sufficient. He has supported CECADE's growth
with both time and resources, and has led groups of local
Rotarians on trips to Peru to witness their work first hand. He was
instrumental in raising Rotary funding to support CECADE. In
addition to his membership to Rotary, Zoller has been a board
member of 1000 Friends Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Academy of
Sciences Arts & Letters, and the Town of Dekorra Planning
Commission. Zoller also served on the board of the Association of
General Contractors (AGC) and as its president in 1994. Zoller was
an avid cyclist, traveler and reader, and a devoted husband, father
and grandfather. Zoller is survived by his wife, Tellervo; sons Raino
(Holly) of Boise, Idaho, and Panu (Jennifer) of River Falls, Wis.; his
daughter, Satu (David) of South Deerfield, Mass.; and seven
grandchildren, Raili, Alex and Kai of South Deerfield, Jari and Niko
of River Falls, and Taavi and Kaija of Boise. Zoller is also survived
by his sisters, Irene and Ursula; and brothers Jochen and Werner
of Germany; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers,
