Drivers overtaking cyclists often respond to a slow-down arm signal, so I never go anywhere without a helmet mirror to spot these impatient/reckless drivers. Maybe in this case, the driver was immune to feelings of compassion for a cyclist on the road..
A mirror can also give a split-second warning of the need to dive for the ditch, as well.. At least the news report quoted the Columbia County Sheriff's Dept as saying, "Vehicle operators need to remember that a motorcycle and bicyclist also have a right of way on the roadway. It's called a shared right.
