1. We all need a little encouragement from time to time and that's what Bike To Work Week is all about. Through fun and informational activities, we educate people about riding to work and other destinations, but most of all encourage how easy and fun it can be.

Help spread the word about these events...Come by our office and get some Bike To Work Week posters and postcards and any other BFW literature to help us spread the word all over town (they go well in coffee shops, places of worship, lunchrooms, kiosks, etc). Just tell people how much healthier, wealthier, and, most importantly, happier they'll feel by bicycling to work.

And once you've got them interested, send them to a bike route map, which makes getting around much easier. We'll have bicycle maps of the city and the county outside our office, available while supplies last or always available online: Madison Area Transportation Options Map http://www.madisonmap.com/.

4. Workplace Challenge details:
Get your co-workers involved in this friendly competition...how many trips to and from work are taken by bicycle from Monday to Thursday? Winners in each size category receive prizes. See below for details or contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED], 251-4456.

The Work Place Challenge continues this year, May 15-18, 2006 during BTWW! BTWW related info to be found at <http://www.bfw.org/btww/calendar.php>http://www.bfw.org/btww/calendar.php

What’s the Work Place Challenge? It's a competition between different worksites to see who can get the most folks cycle commuting to and from their workplaces (using a formula we call the Effort Index).

Why should Work Places enter the Challenge?
#1 Employees who bike to work healthier, happier, and more productive.
#2 The fewer car parking spaces an employer has to provide, the cheaper their overall costs, which makes them more profitable (see also #1).
#3 Great prizes to the winners of each category!

How does the Work Place Challenge work?
Each participant must register for Bike To Work Week here: <http://www.bfw.org/btww/2006BTWW_registration.php>http://www.bfw.org/btww/2006BTWW_registration.php

One person at a workplace agrees to tally the number of (one way) BICYCLE commute trips made by folks registered for BTWW to or from work from Monday, May 15 - Thursday May 18 (inclusive). Only the trip to and from work can be counted each day, so each employee registered can have a maximum or 8 trips for the Monday through Thursday of BTWW. To be eligible to win, email the total, along with the number of employees at the workplace, to me, [EMAIL PROTECTED], no later than 6pm on Thursday, May 18. I'll apply the Effort Index to the results and determine the winners. Again, all participants must be registered for BTWW. Winners will be announced at the BTWW Final Fiesta at the Vilas Park shelter Friday May 19. If you’re workplace plans to participate, please have one person email me ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) asap to tell me how many employees there are at your workplace (estimates are fine for the purpose of me setting up the spreadsheet).

Can we count walkers, joggers, skaters, rowers, or paddlers?
No, only bicycle commuting trips count, and you can only count two trips per employee per day. We love to hear about people getting to work (or wherever) using any mode other than alone in a car, but our mission is to promote bicycling, so we're trying to encourage that. Unfortunately, we've also learned that if we let people count more than the (bicycle) trip to work and back home, some folks substitute lunch-time trips in which they'd normally walk for bicycle trips to drive up the numbers, which isn't the point either. The idea is to get as many folks as possible trading car trips for bike trips.

What exactly is the “Effort Index”? If you insist on knowing the formula, it’s:
total#one-way-trips / [(2)*squareroot(#employees)]. Why do we use this formula? Because it tends to compensate for how much harder it is to change behavior in many people at a larger workplace than to influence a large proportion of people at a smaller workplace. In other words, it acknowledges the much greater effectiveness of one-on-one communication between people who know each other. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and start communicating all the benefits of biking wherever you need to go!

Send me an email if you have any questions, and Thanks!
