I consider myself a pretty strong environmentalist, but I just don't have a problem with the ATV area, in fact I think it's a good idea.  And no I don't have or ride them.  Here's why:

30 gallons of gas a year per ATV is MIINISCULE compared to auto use.  Even .1 mpg CAFE increase would be huge compared to all ATVs.

The 'environmental destruction' caused by this development probably pales in comparison to your average subdivision.

When I'm out in the woods I'd rather have the ATV's somewhere else, like a popular ATV destination.

The same disturb wildlife destroy vegetation arguments often used against ATV's also get applied to mountain biking which I happen to enjoy.  They have some right to recreate too.

I think ATV users are similar to hunting and fishing organizations, in that we greenies would do well to count them as our allies in the interests of preserving natural areas, instead of making enemies.

Just my 2 cents, let the angry replies begin....

The potential creation of a state recreation area for motorized vehicles will be discussed by the state Natural Resources Board at its June 28 meeting in River Falls.  DNR staff will ask the board to consider approving the development of a plan for such a facility.

There are almost 300,000 ATVs registered in Wisconsin.  A 2005 study on ATV use in Minnesota found the average ATV burns about 30 gallons of gasoline a year for recreational purposes.  At 30 gallons per ATV, the 300,000 ATVs currently registered in Wisconsin already burn 9 million gallons of gasoline per year.

For each gallon of gasoline burned in an internal combustion engine, approximately 23 pounds of carbon dioxide is emitted to the atmosphere, which suggests that over 100,000 tons (103,500 tons) of carbon dioxide is emitted to the atmosphere each year from recreational use of ATVs in Wisconsin already.

The problem is that neither the DNR nor the state (much less the federal government) has any kind of anti-global warming policy.  If they did, I doubt they'd be promoting this kind of frivolous burning of gasoline, with the resulting additional loading of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.

--------------- Preceding Message ---------------

Good grief...

http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=432812

23% of Wisconsin citizens use ATV's? Seems very high. I know many use them for
work purposes such as farming, but how many ATV's are actually used for
recreation? It looks like DNR inflated the numbers to justifty their actions.

The D.N.R is setting an interesting precedent developing this project!

What next? Motorized Disney theme parks?

The DNR needs to go back to its roots and realize it has a primary mission to
protect and conserve state natural resources.

Any DNR development of ATV areas will ignite a firestorm of controvery regarding
DNR policy. The agency should stay out of the ATV entertainment business.

I am amazed the agency is even considering this proposal. The DNR seems hell
bent on creating a state environmental disaster area... and global warming
site...
