Doug,

Of course we should concentrate on the major contributors of greenhouse gases!   Many of here have been advocating for LESS driving (or no driving) before global warming became much of an issue. But just because there are other larger sources ought there shouldn't mean we look the other way on everything else that contributes to the problem.  After all, the climate we bike in is affected by the volume of greenhouse gases present in the atmosphere. Everything that affects the climate ought therefore be of concern to us, and not just the big contributors.

As for your comments about DNR's mission, DNR shouldn't have to promote every kind of recreational pursuit under the sun.  ATV use is bad for the environment, even if it is "managed".  So is snowmobiling and motor boat cruising for that matter.  DNR nor the state ought be promoting activities burn fuel for exclusively for recreation - not with the growing threat of global warming becoming more and more evident and foreboding.

As for the need to compromise, it's not justified when it comes to global warming.  The impacts of increased greenhouse gas emissions are too far removed in time and location from their sources.  The inconvenient truth of the matter is that nature doesn't compromise anyway.  So the focus has to be on minimizing greenhouse gases emissions from all sources as soon as possible.  Frivolous fuel burning in ATVs won't be the only thing that has to be sacrificed.
