Title: West Waubesa Preservation Coalition
Hello all,
I was asked by a friend to post this to my favorite lists. Sorry for the late notice on the canvass, but it is in plenty of time for the Tuesday presentation....

Sounds like this development will test Fitchburg's claim to be a smart growth community....

The West Waubesa Preservation Coalition seeks canvassers for Sat., June 24 and Sun. June 25. You will be combing Fitchburg house by house to find allies in our effort to stop the Northeast Neighborhood (about 800 acres) from being developed.
This lovely piece of agricultural land lies just south of the Capitol Cities Bike Trail (where it parallels E. Clayton Rd. south of Madison). We have a proposal to make it a center for sustainable agriculture within biking distance of large population centers in Fitchburg and Madison. (see more details below if you have time.)
We need your help to reach more Fitchburgers, so that they can pressure their alders to preserve this land, instead of letting another car-centered development spring up on it. Can you give 2 or 3 hours of your time this weekend?
If so, please report to 3113 View Rd., Madison 53711 (really in the town of Dunn) at 10 a.m. on Sat., June 24 and/or Sun. June 25. There will be a training, and then you'll get a route that should take about 90 min. The routes are about 3 or 4 miles from here, good info if you are biking.
Thank you so much! Please RSVP to me at [EMAIL PROTECTED], or 223-9571, so that I know how many canvassers to expect.
Yours for a sustainable world, Phyllis Hasbrouck
P.S. I hope that you can also attend the event that you'll be finding attendees for! See the press release below for the details on this exciting event on Tues., June 27.
Biking Directions: If you have a bike, it's about 1/2 hour (if you're fast, 45 if you're not) from the capitol on the Capitol Cities Trail. Just go by the Monona Terrace, the Alliant Energy Center, under the beltline with the train tracks, through the sewage disposal plant, past the Lussier Family Heritage Center, through the countryside until you reach roads again. Take a left on Larsen Rd., go about ‘ mile uphill, take the second left, which is Nora Ln. Nora is one block long and ends in a T. Go right on View and our house is the middle of 3, on the right, with the peace sign. 3113 View Rd.

West Waubesa Preservation Coalition
to present anti-sprawl proposal to the public on June 27
On Tues., June 27, the Fitchburg Community Center, at 5520 Lacy Rd., will be the site of a public presentation and community discussion about the controversial possibility of developing the farmland in Fitchburg's "Northeast Neighborhood."
A representative of 1000 Friends of Wisconsin will present an illustrated talk comparing poorly planned development with New Urbanist and rail-centered design. People will be able to see just what is meant by "mixed-use, high density, walkable neighborhoods centered on passenger rail lines," and will hear about plans for such a development at Green Tech Village.
Next, Cal Dewitt, Professor of Environmental Studies at the UW Madison, and world-renowned wetlands expert, will speak about the wetlands of Dunn and Fitchburg, and how developing the "Northeast Neighborhood" would endanger them.
Then Phyllis Hasbrouck and Butch Powell of the West Waubesa Preservation Coalition will present that group's alternative proposal for the approximately 390 acres now held by a developer: an organic agriculture school on a working farm, community gardens to serve the residents of Swan Creek and Green Tech Village, and a restored wetland for research and relaxation. All of these things would be easily accessed by bicyclists, because the northern edge of the parcel is just a quarter mile south of the Capitol Cities Bike Trail. (Where it comes to the corner of Larsen Rd. and E. Clayton Rd.)
Finally, Senn Brown, Director of the Charter Schools Association of Wisconsin, will give a brief talk on the growing movement of environmentally focused charter schools in WI, and how to start one.
The presentations will take one hour and 15 min, and then there will be 30 min. for community discussion. This is an opportunity for all parties to the debate to hear from and be heard by the rest of the community.
